HISTORICAL PROJECTS
- fix the cracked exterior stone masonry walls
- stabilize the side walls by adding large steel beams
- add interior load bearing posts and retro-refitting, hurricane-resistant connections.
This project required a contractor with a lot of construction experience, particularly with structural components such as: 20′ tall rock walls without steel reinforcement; structural steel engineering and placement, including field welding; and fine finish woodworking skills to renovate the native ohia and koa wood work that was almost 200 years old.
We were thrilled to work with Re-use Hawaii, a nonprofit organization that deconstructs buildings to avoid demolition and recovers the building material to recycle back into use.
It meant a lot to use, the congregation, and the community that the church be restored for another 200 years. We gave this project our heart and soul and would love to bring the same level of passion to your historical renovation.
Mokuaikaua Church
In 2019, Ali’i Builders had the honor of restoring the Mokuaikaua Church in Kailua-Kona, the oldest Christian church in Hawaii. Built in 1837, the Mokuaikaua Church is the first example of Western or European architecture on the islands, the result of iron tools being introduced to the islands.
